In General: Every time you hit Send/Publish, you’re doing more than just transferring data—you’re setting it free from the confines of your host app, and it lands on the Speckle server, our AEC Data Hub.
In Detail: Think of typical conversion plugins as single-task tools. They do one job—convert data—but that’s where it ends. The AEC Data Hub is a different beast. It’s not just about moving data around; it’s about unlocking its potential. You get version control, a 3D viewer, version comparisons (spot the differences), and tools for commenting and side-by-side reviews. Plus, there’s formatless model federation, letting you merge data from various sources without a conversion nightmare.
The AEC Data Hub is designed to be more than just a file repository (like a traditional CDE). It’s a granular, flexible data layer that lets you build, automate, collaborate, and even feed your data into machine learning workflows—all without vendor lock-ins or artificial limitations. Essentially, it’s where your data becomes more than just data—it becomes a living, breathing part of your projects. As we grow, expect to get more and more value out of your data - directly at the hub.

You’ve raised an important question. At Speckle, we’re all about putting control back in the hands of the creators. Our AEC Data Hub is designed so you can manage and use your data on your terms. Unlike some platforms (looking at you, ADSK), where customer data might be mined and used for training models—only to be sold back to you—we’re equipping you with the tools to leverage your data as you see fit.
And yes, we mean it: your data is yours. It’s laid out in our terms (even if they’re the ones no one reads!). We’re committed to ensuring you keep ownership and control over your assets, so any benefits from your data stay where they belong—with you.
