I know this isn’t at the core of what Speckle tries to do, but is there a possibility to export directly to .dwg with Speckle? Or would I have to use the connector to Autocad and then export from Autocad? Wondering whether Autodesk software can be skipped entirely here 
A prototype of an Ares Commander connector is floating around, but that is replicating what you suggest, exporting Speckle data to DWG from an application.
The core codes in Speckle will always be open source, so we wouldn’t be distributing anything with a licence that restricted that.
DXF would be a more viable option, but these are all in the Not Now pile as with IFC.
