Microstation support

Hi guys,

I am wondering if you can transfer all types of elements from Revit to Microstation? say, text, surface, block (family), lines, data, etc.? this will be awesome!
Thanks

Hi Speckle team,
Just wondering if you can expand/develop more this Microstation to Speckle connection? thank you so much!

Hi Jonathon,

Good day, when i open microstation connect, the speckle panel is not showing up again? any help? thanks.

Hey @Joel_Ocampo, sorry to moderate you from several old posts to a topic all your own, but you weren’t being answered as best we could have done that way.

To address the elephant in the room: Bentley support has been stagnant for some time.

Originally, Arup developed the MicroStation, OpenRoads, OpenBridge, and OpenBuildings connectors as a community-led initiative, but maintaining them became an unsustainable effort. At some point (difficult to pinpoint exactly when) active maintenance dropped off. When we started developing Next Gen Connectors, the unofficial responsibility for Bentley ecosystem support landed on us, but in practice, usage has remained quite low. We’ve only seen limited adoption across a handful of companies; far fewer than other connectors we actively maintain. It’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation: low demand makes it a lower priority, which in turn keeps adoption low.

So, where does Bentley support stand today?

Bentley support will come to Next Gen, but unless we see a significant increase in demand, it sits lower on the priority list.

Our roadmap for new connectors always starts with data extraction; we first ensure users can get data out of an application before investing in deeper integration. We call this reference modeling when there’s a need to view and interact with Speckle data inside another application. If demand grows for full, high-fidelity interoperability, we move toward what we call multiplayer modeling (bi-directional workflows). Right now, Bentley is still quite far from reaching that stage.

Back to you — what’s your goal?

So, I’ll turn the question back to you:

  • What specifically are you looking to achieve with MicroStation?

  • If you’re using other Bentley tools, what workflows are you trying to unlock?

We ask this a lot when users request new connectors because, in a sense, Bentley support today is like launching a new connector from scratch. Understanding real use cases helps us gauge priority and move things forward. Let us know what you need!

This question is to everyone here. Let’s talk about Bentley.

Hi Jonathon,

Thank you for your response, most of the time, import/ export elements from AutoCAD and MicroStation are always the case that we use to encounter from time to time as we are working in other disciplines using AutoCAD file. Using Speckle is cutting the import/ export process and cleaning drawing inside model, the only issue is we need all the element types, like line, curve, polyline, text, hatch, dimension, etc. to be included in passing the data. For MicroStation, this is quite limited and it will be awesome if all the elements can be passed onto it from other CAD software, vice versa.

Developing this connector is really a good way working with MicroStation interoperability.

Kind regards,
Joel

@jonathon,

In the UK rail sector, we are contractually obliged for our deliverables to be issued in Bentley products. This poses a big resourcing challenge for large engineering consultancies as it limits the resource pool we can call on to smooth out workload peaks and troughs.

When I first came across Speckle I hoped that it would allow us to author models in any software but still deliver through Bently. But so far this has not been a reality.

So I think the demand is significant.

I am a bridge designer and my wish list would be to be able to develop 3D bridge models in either Revit or Rhino or easily transfer to openbuildings and back so they can be easily updated in either software.
