Forma Over Function?

Hey everyone,

Who’s using Autodesk Forma? And more importantly—would you want to see Speckle connectivity with it?

Now, Autodesk isn’t exactly rushing to roll out Speckle support. They’ve got their walled garden policies, and—let’s be honest—they seem a little intimidated by us. Which is adorable, really.

That said, we’re not here to ruffle feathers (well, not just for that)—we’re here to serve you. And the truth is, I actually hacked some Forma data into Speckle over a weekend and a train journey, and it worked reasonably well. Credit where it’s due—their plugin architecture made it surprisingly easy. But before we think about making it official, we need to know: do you actually want it? Would it be useful? How would you use it?

Let us know—because as much as I love a good weekend hack, we only build what you actually need!

We are using it extensively. One problem you could solve for us, is a quicker and easier way to send our massing proposals from Rhino to Forma. Right now the workflow is Export to OBJ, import to forma, place it.

Ahh Speckle into Forma - I hadn’tt yet considered that - I’ve mentally pegged it as a generative tool only - I need more education.

Isn’t this Forma and ADSK’s job via their data exchanges?

There is a Rhino Plug-In to assist on that task. But, the expected workflow from their Plug-In is as follows:

  1. Receive forma context (map and buildings) in Rhino.
  2. Place your massing proposal according to the received context.
  3. Push it to forma.

Most of the time we simply cannot “receive” because the project is already setup in a specific way (has its own orientation, scale, etc). And is not worth to reposition the project to make Forma happy.

Understood - though working with located context is always a challenge - but this is valuable insight thatnkyou

NYC Based - Know tons of people using Revit, and no one using Forma. I tried implementing it at a firm one time and it proved fruitless. It’d be better to fix the issues with speckle between Revit and Blender IMO.
