Blender 4.2 Speckle

Hi Speckle team,

  • After Blender’s new 4.2 version, I am unable to install the Blender Speckle Addon.
  • For this feature to be useful in an architectural workflow, we absolutely need textures to export without any excuse.
Not sure how else to convey the importance of this as it has been 2 years since I’ve asked if this will ever be implemented. Please get the most useful features like this fixed first before jumping on more advanced features.

Using a previous Blender build (4.0), I can see the addon. However, I’m still having issues loading my previous projects. Even if I use the URL method. I am using Speckle Connecter version 2.19.1 for Blender.

This is the warning I get:

Python: Traceback (most recent call last):
File “C:\Users\psalehishafa\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\4.0\scripts\addons\bpy_speckle\operators\streams.py”, line 469, in execute
self.add_stream_from_url(context)
File “C:\Users\psalehishafa\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\4.0\scripts\addons\bpy_speckle\operators\streams.py”, line 506, in add_stream_from_url
raise SpeckleException(f"Could not get the requested project {wrapper.stream_id}")
specklepy.logging.exceptions.SpeckleException: SpeckleException: Could not get the requested project a9be50f0d7

I don’t want Blender Speckle Connecter to be a useless feature due to small issues as I see how much potential there is here.

Thank you again team for a great product.

Coincidentally Blender 4.2 and Speckle 2.19.3 were released on exactly the same date. Blender (and QGIS for that matter) have tendencies to change embedded Python versions pretty frequently, so we wont have test for 4.2 when we released 2.19.3.

We have a Release Candidate for 2.20 available as a wip build, but from memory nothing for Blender was touched, bt I can check to confirm.

So, given that context, thanks for the report - we can look into it, if we cant replicate we’ll ask back here if you can help confirm some things.

We added support for Blender 4.2 in 2.20, you should use the latest release candidate.
The full stable release should come within the next week or so.

Thanks for checking on that @Jedd, and @jonathon. I was able to resolve the issue with my projects not loading. I just had to log back in as it was unclear I was not logged in.

  • The only issue left for now is the texture implementation. Is there a reason this is not part of Speckles current capability? Is there going to be a support?

@Payman_Salehishafa There is a short and long answer.

A) We intend to support textures with models.

B) None of the software we support handles textures similarly - we have parked the issue in favour of other priorities because resolving this is a rather massive effort based on requests for its low impact. That said we’ve had this parked state for 2 years, it may be time for review once the V3 connectors are more progressed.
