Dear @Community, we have some important news.
It has been five amazing years, since Speckle became your free, open-source data hub—no limits, no paywalls.
As more of you rely on us (with over 620,000 models or over 1.9 billion walls, windows, beams, and other objects stored!), our costs have grown tremendously. You don’t need a PhD to understand this is not sustainable in the long term.
To keep improving—faster connectors, even better 3D viewer, analytics, and automation features—we’re making two important changes:
- All projects are moving to workspaces (replacing personal projects).
- We’re introducing limits to support sustainable growth and adding a free Viewer seat.
It’s not just about keeping things afloat; it’s about scaling Speckle to help you work better together and shape a more connected future for our industry.
So, what does this mean for your workflows today?
- Your workspace projects and personal projects now live in separate spaces in the web app. You can navigate between them using the top-left navigation. Check it out at app.speckle.systems!
- The project roles have been renamed from Contributor → Can edit and Reviewer → Can view. Most importantly, the Can view role can no longer receive/load in connectors. You’ll now need the Contributor/Can edit role to be able to do this.
- Existing workspaces
- Trial workspaces → Now on the Free plan without any time limits #Speckle4EVER. Previously expired workspace trials have also been reborn on the Free trial.
- Inviting is FREE People joining a workspace join on a free viewer seat. So: INVITE YOUR ENTIRE TEAM! You can upgrade them to an Editor seat later if they need to create and contribute to projects beyond viewing and commenting.
After the migration, you might want to double-check the roles and permissions. Talk with your workspace admin and/or project owners!
So, what does this mean for you in the coming months?
You’ll have to move your projects to a workspace by June 1st to:
- Create new projects and models (will be disabled for personal projects; existing projects and models stay editable)
- Invite new project collaborators (new invites will be unavailable for personal projects)
- Preserve version and comment history (history is reduced to 7 days for personal projects)
What does this mean for you until the end of the year?
All projects will be archived if not moved into a workspace. Don’t worry, we’ll give you plenty of reminders before then.
What’s changing with pricing? We’ve designed the new Speckle plans to match how teams actually use Speckle:
• You only pay for Editors (teammates who publish/load data with connectors).
• Viewers are free! Clients, reviewers, or anyone just viewing models in the 3D viewer and commenting won’t cost a thing.
These are the must-know things at the moment, as well as a conversation opener. Your feedback on the plans, questions or concerns are extremely important to us—we’re all ears!
To get the full story behind these changes and explore the FAQ we prepared after talking to a few power users beforehand, check out the announcement here: Speckle projects get a new home and pricing plans

PS: If this means you cannot use Speckle anymore, don’t worry: Speckle is still open source, and this means you can still use it for free, without any limits, if you deploy the server yourself.
PPS: If you are a student or an academic, we offer all our plans for free without any limits. We’ve all been scrappy students on ramen budget, so this is a forever pledge.
