Tekla Connector Roadmap

Hi there,

this is just to ask the Speckle team if there’s a general roadmap about the Tekla connector in the next gen version of Speckle connectors.
Planning ahead we will require streaming data from Speckle into Tekla (not necessarily the other way around) in the near future. Could you give us any estimate or should we not calculate with this feature being ready anytime soon.

Some more info:

  • Which application your Speckle model is published from?
We will ne to go From Rhino / Grasshopper to Tekla and would love to do this via Speckle
  • Why you want to load your model into Tekla Structures?
To be able to do proper structural analyses of geometry generated proceduraly in Grasshopper
  • How frequently you would use this workflow (daily, weekly, monthly, longer).
If working properly our client would use this daily on large scale projects.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. We could also imagine contributing to this feature open source.. but don’t really know where to start and how to estimate the effort.

Thanks
Ben

Good to hear that you’re interested in our Tekla Connector. I got two questions to understand your workflow better and than I can explain our plans and help you on that front.

  • Is there a specific reason that you’re not using Tekla Plugin for Grasshopper?
  • You mentioned you’d like to perform structural analysis. This is possible in Tekla Structures Designer which we don’t support. I want to be sure that we’re talking about same things.

Servus @dogukan and thanks for the swift response.

So here are a few more details: we’re developing a Rhino / Grasshopper plugin for a client where we generate a lot of structural objects. The requirements for this project contain three key elements. We need:

  • a connection to Speckle (to be able to make use of PowerBI and potentially more tools later one)
  • a connection to Tekla Structures (not Tekla Structural Designer) (streaming models from Grasshopper to Tekla)
  • the plugin should be based on .Net 7 (targetting Rhino 8), not .Net framework, so we can support MacOS

Now we are assessing our options. The existing Tekla Grasshopper live link is based on .Net framework, not .Net (Core), so can’t be easily made use of.

As we are required to integrate with Speckle anyways it’d be fantastic to just use Speckle as our main hub to talk to all other required apps (including Tekla), without a need to use another tool like Grasshopper Tekla Live Link.

Now my comment saying something about structural analysis in Tekla was a mistake. Frankly, I never touched Tekla and I don’t know much about their versions’ capabilities. All I know is that we need to stream models to Tekla Structures
