Technical Feasibility of Custom Speckle → Tekla Geometry Import Development

We’re working on a project that requires bidirectional connectivity between Tekla Structures and Speckle, specifically for loading geometry from Speckle into Tekla. This geometry would then feed into downstream workflows including IFC export and Power BI analytics.

Current Situation: We’ve discovered that the next-gen connectors currently only support publishing from Tekla to Speckle (one-way). While we understand this limitation exists, we’re exploring the possibility of developing our own solution using the available open-source code.

Our Question: We’d love to understand the technical challenges that currently prevent geometry import from Speckle to Tekla. Specifically:

  • What are the main technical hurdles or complexities involved?
  • Are there particular aspects of the Tekla API or Speckle’s data structure that make this challenging?
  • Has anyone in the community attempted similar custom development?

Why We’re Asking: We’re trying to properly scope the development effort and determine if this is feasible for our team to tackle internally. Any insights about the technical difficulties, potential workarounds, or lessons learned would be incredibly valuable for our evaluation.
