Power BI 3D visual: "Stream failed: .dat unsupported formatVersion 4"

Hi all,

The Speckle 3D visual in Power BI fails to render a newly uploaded model (screenshot below). Data loads fine through Speckle.GetTables, and the model opens in the web viewer. Only the geometry in the visual fails.

  • Connector and visual: 2026.9.2 (latest installer)
  • Model: Navisworks .nwd, file upload on Sep 30, ~248k objects
  • Filtering the visual down to fewer than 10 objects gives the same error, so it is not a model size issue

Is a visual release that supports formatVersion 4 coming, or is there a way to publish the model as formatVersion 3 in the meantime?

Happy to share the model URL by DM. Thanks!

Hi Speckle team,

Since October 1st, a new model version we uploaded fails to load in the Power BI visual with this message:

“Stream failed: .dat unsupported formatVersion 4 (supported: 1, 2, 3)”

What we checked:

  • Visual and data connector are both 2026.9.2, which is the latest release on GitHub. Reinstalling did not change anything.
  • The data loads normally into the table. Only the 3D geometry fails in the visual.
  • Older versions of the same model, uploaded before October 1st, still load fine in the same report.
  • The upload method did not change: drag and drop of a .nwd file on the web app (importer shows “Navisworks 0.1.0”). The same method worked on Sep 2, Sep 11 and Sep 18. The version uploaded on Oct 1 fails.
  • The new version opens correctly in the Speckle web viewer.
  • Another report in the same workspace, whose latest versions are from before Oct 1, still works.

Questions:

  1. What changed so that this version was generated in formatVersion 4?
  2. Is there a Power BI visual update planned to support it? Any expected date?
  3. In the meantime, is there a way to get new uploads in a format the current visual can read?

I can share project and version IDs in a private message if needed.

Thanks!

Hello @Patrick @joaoprimo

You will need to update to 2026.10.0

Cheers

Hello @alex,

so we should expect regular monthly update from now, and hotfixes during the month?

Thanks!
