Would it be possible to use the same ‘location spheres’ that BIM360 issues use when displaying a comment? Just to point out exactly what the location of the issue is? (I know this is not part of the BCF standard)

Yes there is 
though they are more ‘spheres’

I think this should be relatively easy to add. They are simply a sphere with a point and a radius.
