Hey Specklers, I’m curious about the pros/cons of a local server vs a Speckel cloud server.
Is the functionality affected in any regarding the below:
- Workspaces
- Sharing models (internal/external)
- Access to building apps/automation.

Hey Chris. It’s gonna be fun unpacking your question! In short, yes, there are big differences. I’m using the following definitions:
First and foremost, a local cloud server will be hobbled by not being able to send out emails for user verification, password reset or other notifications. It’s doable, but not easy. Sharing models with a local server will also be impossible outside your network, so external collaborators are at a loss.
We also have had a hard time helping people set up their servers. It’s a pain to debug via the forum.
That aside, workspaces are closed addon to the server and not avaible as part of our open source core, similarly automate.
Third party apps and integrations will work if they are set up, that is part of the open source core.
But to make this really interesting: what are you cooking with Speckle? Or what are you planning to cook with Speckle?
hey @dimitrie, thanks for the overview! It’s been helpful, I’ve shared this with our system admin and software department who have reassured me that all is in hand. In fact, we have a local server up and running that I’m testing workflows with already. Seems to be working well, same behaviour as the clouds server.
We have some ideas on granular model validation workflows that we are testing at the moment, looks promising.
Will DM on the cooking part
